About Us

At Datacom, we combine technology, expertise, and talented people to help organisations thrive in a rapidly changing world. As one of Australasia's leading technology providers, we work with customers across industries to solve real-world problems and deliver meaningful outcomes.

Whether we're supporting governments, enterprise organisations, or growing businesses, we're committed to creating meaningful outcomes for our customers, communities, and each other.

About the Role

You'll be joining Datacom's Local Government Product Engineering team as a Junior Application Engineer, contributing to the building of our ERP product, Datascape.

We're a collaborative product engineering team that takes real pride in the quality of what we build and the difference it makes for the communities our customers serve.

This role is designed for someone early in their career who wants to develop into an exceptional engineer. You'll work alongside experienced team members to solve real customer problems, contribute to a large enterprise product and learn how modern software and product teams operate. This position centres around configuring customer solutions using system functionality within our proprietary low-code platform, with progressively greater ownership over delivery as you develop.

We're less interested in finding someone who already knows ERP systems and more interested in finding someone with strong technical fundamentals, curiosity, and a genuine desire to learn. You'll succeed if you enjoy understanding how systems work, solving problems and continuously improving your skills.

We're also looking for people who are excited about the future of software engineering. Whether you've been experimenting with AI-assisted development, automation, or new ways of working, we want people who are curious about how technology is changing the way products are built and delivered.

We like to bring people together in person when we can, but we also recognize the benefits of working from home for work/life balance. We leave it to you and the team you join to decide what works best. This opening can be based in either Auckland or Tauranga.

What You’ll Do

As a Junior Application Engineer, you will be focused on:

  • Designing, building and testing product changes while learning established engineering patterns and practices.
  • Working with experienced engineers and product specialists to understand business requirements and deliver quality solutions.
  • Investigating issues, troubleshooting problems and helping maintain existing product functionality.
  • Producing and maintaining technical documentation, knowledge articles and supporting materials.
  • Participating in team delivery activities including planning, reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Learning modern software engineering approaches, including automation, AI-assisted development and emerging agentic engineering practices.

We are an agile company and are keen to respond to changing customer, technology and internal stakeholder needs, which means our roles can evolve over time to meet those needs.

What You’ll Bring

Required skills and experience:

  • Around 1–2 years' experience in a technical, analytical, software-related or IT role, or equivalent practical experience.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Engineering, Science or a related discipline.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • A genuine interest in software engineering, systems and technology.
  • Confident, practical experience with AI tools and their application in a professional setting.
  • Curiosity and a willingness to learn unfamiliar technologies and business domains.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in producing quality work.

Nice to have

  • Exposure to databases and data structures and how data is organized
  • Source control and Git familiarity for version management
  • Working knowledge of APIs and data formats such as JSON and XML
  • Exposure to software delivery practices across the development lifecycle
  • Experience with enterprise software and business systems
  • Familiarity with Agile delivery approaches and iterative delivery
