Full job description
We're looking for a Security Systems Engineer to join our Internet Protection team. This is an opportunity to work with enterprise-scale technology, strengthen your infrastructure and security engineering expertise, and help safeguard the services our customers and people rely on every day.
About the Team
The team is responsible for protecting and managing critical internet-facing security services across ASB's technology environment. Their work helps ensure people can safely access the internet, securely share information, and protect customer and business data from emerging threats.
You'll join a close-knit team that operates at the intersection of infrastructure, networking and cyber security. Working with technologies such as enterprise proxies, email security, zero trust networking and data protection platforms, you'll gain exposure to a broad range of systems while contributing to services that support thousands of users across the organisation.
If you enjoy solving technical problems, working across multiple technologies, and building deep engineering capability, this is a great opportunity to grow your career.
About the Role
This is a hands-on engineering role focused on maintaining, supporting and improving critical security and infrastructure platforms. You'll spend your time responding to operational requests, troubleshooting issues, implementing changes, and performing proactive maintenance to ensure services remain secure, available and performing at their best.
Success in this role comes from combining strong technical foundations with curiosity, continuous learning, and a desire to improve the systems you support.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting and maintaining enterprise internet security and protection platforms
- Managing operational requests, incidents and service improvements
- Troubleshooting and resolving technical issues across infrastructure and security environments
- Administering proxy, email security, data protection and access control services
- Performing system maintenance, patching, upgrades and certificate management
- Contributing to platform reliability, resilience and continuous improvement initiatives
- Creating and maintaining technical documentation, operational procedures and knowledge articles
- Working closely with engineers, technology teams and business stakeholders to deliver secure outcomes
About You
You're an engineer who enjoys understanding how technology works under the hood. You have a solid infrastructure background, strong troubleshooting skills, and a genuine interest in security technologies.
You may already be working in infrastructure engineering, systems administration, networking, platform operations or a similar technical role and are looking to further develop your security engineering career.
We're looking for someone with:
- Around 2-5 years of experience in infrastructure, systems, platform or technology operations roles
- Experience supporting Windows Server or Linux-based environments
- Exposure to virtualisation platforms such as VMware
- Good understanding of networking fundamentals including DNS, routing, connectivity and troubleshooting
- Experience with Active Directory and enterprise server infrastructure
- Knowledge of security technologies such as secure web gateways, proxies, zero trust networking, email security or data protection platforms
- Exposure to platforms such as Zscaler, ProxySG, Symantec or similar technologies
- Experience managing incidents, operational support activities and production environments
- Exposure to cloud platforms, preferably Microsoft Azure
- Scripting or automation experience using PowerShell or similar tools
- Strong problem-solving skills and a methodical approach to troubleshooting
- The ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and work effectively with a range of stakeholders
- A growth mindset with a willingness to learn new technologies and expand your security expertise
The following would be advantageous:
- Relevant infrastructure, networking or security certifications
- Experience with vulnerability management and security hardening
- Knowledge of enterprise change management and IT service management practices
- Evidence of ongoing technical learning and professional development
Working at ASB
At ASB, you'll work alongside talented people who care deeply about delivering great outcomes for our customers and communities. We're committed to creating an environment where people can grow their careers, bring their authentic selves to work, and be part of meaningful change.
We offer a range of benefits to help you thrive both professionally and personally, including:
- Hybrid and flexible working options
- Five days of lifestyle leave each year
- A market-leading parental leave package
- Ongoing learning, development and certification opportunities
- Career growth and internal mobility across one of New Zealand's leading organisations
- Health, wellbeing and employee assistance support
- Banking, insurance and retail partner benefits
- Access to a collaborative and inclusive culture that values different perspectives and experiences
Why Join Us
This is an opportunity to build your career in a team that combines infrastructure engineering with modern security technologies. You'll work on services that are critical to ASB's technology environment while gaining exposure to enterprise-scale platforms, complex technical challenges and evolving security landscapes.
Whether you're looking to deepen your expertise in cyber security, broaden your infrastructure capabilities, or take the next step in your engineering career, you'll be supported by experienced colleagues who are invested in your growth and development.
The work is meaningful, the technology is interesting, and the opportunities to learn are significant.
