Full job description
Join our diverse and talented people and work at the heart of national security, providing essential intelligence to the NZ Government to protect New Zealand and its people.
Mō te tūranga mahi – about the role
We are seeking expressions of interest from Network Engineers who want to grow their skills and expertise while helping keep our national‑scale network running safely and efficiently. Whether you are just starting out (Level 1), have solid operational experience (Level 2), or are an advanced practitioner ready for greater responsibility (Level 3), you will join a supportive, mentorship‑driven team that values continuous learning and high‑impact work.
What you will do:
Incident response: React quickly to network alerts, diagnose faults, and restore service to protect classified communications.
Troubleshooting: Work through complex issues under the guidance of senior engineers, using structured processes and tools.
Change and upgrade work: Assist with scheduled change‑rollouts, device refreshes, and firmware upgrades, following documented procedures.
Health checks & capacity planning: Perform regular network health assessments, track performance trends, and help plan for future capacity needs.
Collaboration: Partner with architects and senior engineers on designs, reviews and project work, contributing ideas and learning from experienced colleagues.
Mentoring & culture: Share knowledge with newer team members, participate in peer‑learning sessions, and help foster a collaborative, high‑performing environment.
This is a great opportunity where you will get hands‑on with a broad portfolio of complex networks, firewalls and related infrastructure. You will work side‑by‑side with our seasoned engineers who provide on‑the‑job mentoring, helping you expand your security‑focused skills needed for mission‑critical operations, while a clear progression pathway guides your career growth within the intelligence community.
Ko wai koe – about you
You are a team player who thrives in an open‑plan, collaborative setting. You can communicate clearly with both technical peers and non‑technical customers, turning requirements into workable solutions. Each support interaction is a chance for you to sharpen your problem‑solving skills while contributing to a mission that safeguards the nation.
You will bring along your:
LAN and WAN troubleshooting ability, combined with a solid awareness of network‑security principles.
A good grasp of TCP/IP fundamentals, common switching technologies and routing protocols.
Hands‑on experience configuring, moving, adding and changing routers, switches and firewalls, and the confidence to troubleshoot and resolve issues that arise.
Familiarity with diagnostic tools such as log analysis, packet captures (PCAPs) and debugging utilities to pinpoint and fix network problems.
Understanding of Layer 2 and Layer 3 concepts—including link aggregation, MTU considerations, OSPF/BGP routing, IPSEC/MACSEC, certificate‑based PKI, MPLS and VRF segmentation.
Experience with network automation using Ansible, Git, Jinja2, YAML, JSON, and network management protocols such as NETCONF
If you’re ready to make a difference, grow your career, and be part of a team that values innovation, excellence, and national service, we want to hear from you!
