Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is the country's largest employer, delivering universal public healthcare to 5 million New Zealanders.
We provide essential hospital, specialist, and community health services across 80+ locations - from large urban centres to rural towns and remote communities.
Our goal is to improve health outcomes for all New Zealanders by delivering equitable, accessible and innovative care.
About the Role
The Analyst role provides analytical support to inform health service planning, performance improvement, investment decisions, and strategic priorities across Health New Zealand. The position is responsible for collecting, preparing, analysing, and interpreting data to generate reliable evidence and meaningful insights that support national and regional decision-making.
The role involves producing accurate reports, dashboards, and visualisations, monitoring health system performance, identifying trends, and investigating data quality issues. Working alongside senior and principal analysts, the Analyst collaborates with stakeholders to understand their requirements, develop repeatable analytical solutions, and communicate findings clearly to support better health outcomes, equitable access to services, and continuous improvement across the health system.
About the Team/Service/ Location
The Analyst will be part of the Health Planning & Insights team, which supports evidence-based planning, performance monitoring, investment decisions, and service improvement across Health New Zealand. The team works collaboratively to transform complex data into practical insights that help identify emerging issues, assess service performance, and inform strategic priorities.
The role involves working with national and regional teams, including Primary and Community Services, Mental Health and Addictions, Hospital and Specialist Services, Finance, Hauora Māori Services, Pacific Health, and Data and Digital teams. It also involves engagement with external agencies and stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health and other relevant organisations. The position supports an inclusive and collaborative environment that values Te Tiriti o Waitangi, equitable health outcomes, continuous learning, and high-quality public health services.
About you
You will have a relevant tertiary qualification in business analysis, business insights, public health, data science, statistics, or a related discipline, along with approximately one to five years of experience in an analytical or data-focused role, or equivalent demonstrated capability. You will have a sound understanding of analytical principles and the ability to collect, clean, interpret, and validate data to produce accurate and meaningful insights.
You will also have strong communication, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly to different audiences. Experience with tools such as Power BI, Excel, Qlik, or R, along with dashboard development and data visualisation, will be valuable. You will demonstrate initiative, integrity, accountability, and a commitment to teamwork, continuous improvement, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and improving health outcomes for Māori and all communities.
To succeed in this role, you will bring:
- Hold a relevant tertiary qualification in business analysis, data science, statistics, public health, or a related field, or demonstrate equivalent experience and learning.
- Have approximately one to five years of experience in analytical or data-focused roles, or equivalent demonstrated capability.
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of analytical principles and the ability to generate insights that support organisational decision-making.
- Have experience using Power BI, Excel, Qlik, R, or similar tools to analyse data and develop effective visualisations and dashboards.
- Be able to collect, cleanse, validate, analyse, and interpret data while identifying data quality issues and reporting limitations.
- Possess strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present analytical findings clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrate critical thinking, sound judgement, and problem-solving skills to identify trends, assess performance, and recommend improvement opportunities.
- Build positive stakeholder relationships, work collaboratively with diverse teams, and demonstrate a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, equity, continuous improvement, and professional development.
