We’re looking for academics with curiosity, energy and openness to new ideas, who are committed to collegiality, cultural humility and respect for Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Indigenous peoples and diverse communities. Experience contributing to Indigenous, equity or inclusion-focused initiatives is highly valued.
Working closely with the Director of the Additive Manufacturing Laboratory and a multidisciplinary team of researchers, postgraduate students, and industry partners, you will play a pivotal role in developing additive manufacturing technologies and materials, advancing research capability, and delivering innovative solutions across advanced engineering, aerospace, energy, biomedical, and electromagnetic applications. The successful candidate will combine outstanding scientific capability with advanced technical expertise, operating at the forefront of materials, manufacturing, and engineering research while maintaining and continually advancing AUT's state-of-the-art additive manufacturing infrastructure.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- A PhD in Additive Manufacturing, with a demonstrated record of research achievement in the advanced additive manufacturing of engineering materials.
- Current manufacturer-recognised certification in the operation and maintenance of the EOS laser sintering system and the Renishaw laser melting system, together with a minimum of five years' experience operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimising these platforms in a research environment.
- Extensive experience in laser-based powder bed fusion technologies, including selective laser sintering (SLS) and selective laser melting (SLM), across a broad range of engineering materials and applications.
- Demonstrated expertise in additive manufacturing process development, laser–material interactions, powder behaviour, melt pool dynamics, process optimisation, and the relationships between processing conditions, microstructure, and engineering performance.
- Proven research expertise in advanced engineering materials, including magnetic materials, high-entropy alloys, multi-material systems, topology-optimised structures, cryogenic characterisation, and functionally engineered components.
- Demonstrated experience in magnetically assisted additive manufacturing, controlled magnetic heterogeneity, and the development of advanced functional devices for applications such as heat exchangers, energy systems, fuel cells, and electromagnetic devices.
- An established publication record in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals, demonstrating internationally recognised research contributions in advanced additive manufacturing, particularly in multi-material additive manufacturing, magnetic and functional materials, field-assisted and field-controlled additive manufacturing, high-entropy alloys, and the development of advanced components for heat exchangers, energy systems, fuel cells, and other high-performance engineering applications.
- Extensive experience in metallographic sample preparation, advanced materials characterisation, and the interpretation of theoretical, numerical, and experimental data to establish robust process–structure–property relationships.
- Proven ability to independently conceive, plan, execute, and deliver complex research programmes while contributing effectively within multidisciplinary research teams.
- Experience in preparing competitive research funding proposals, developing strategic research collaborations, and supporting externally funded research programmes.
- Excellent scientific writing, communication, and presentation skills, together with the ability to mentor undergraduate and postgraduate students and engage effectively with academic, industrial, and international collaborators.
- Current certification and demonstrated experience in the safe handling of hazardous materials and compliance with New Zealand health and safety legislation, including laboratory risk management, laser safety, hazardous substances management, chemical handling, and the development of safe operating procedures.
- A commitment to scientific excellence, innovation, continuous improvement, and the advancement of AUT's international reputation in additive manufacturing research.
