Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) from overseas trained doctors currently living in New Zealand who are interested in progressing toward a career in General Practice (GP) or Urgent Care through the NZREX Primary Care Pathway.

We have multiple fixed term opportunities based in Auckland, commencing in December 2026. The programme begins with orientation in December 2026, followed by clinical placements from January 2027.

The two-year pathway provides overseas-trained doctors with experience across both hospital and primary care settings while supporting progression toward full registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).

Participants will complete:

12 months in hospital-based placements

12 months in primary care placements

Placements are designed to support clinical development and workforce needs across primary, urgent and rural health services.

As a preferred candidate for this EOI, you will:

Currently reside in New Zealand

Have passed either NZREX, PLAB Part 2, or AMC Clinical examination since February 2022 and meet the eligibility requirements for registration with the MCNZ

Have a minimum of one year post-graduation clinical experience working as a doctor outside New Zealand or Australia

Have a genuine interest in pursuing a career in Primary Care in Aotearoa New Zealand

Submission Requirements

A complete application must include:

A certified copy of your NZREX, PLAB Part 2 or AMC Clinical pass letter

An up to date CV using our template available here, outlining your overseas clinical experience, any paid or voluntary work in New Zealand, and other relevant information. Please also account for any periods without employment.

Certified evidence of your primary medical degree

Certified copies of your passport and drivers license NZ or Overseas

A certified copy of a document is document which has been sighted and signed by a New Zealand Justice of the Peace (JP).
