R J Food Limited trading as Hey Bro Otorohanga is looking for a skilled Chef to join our team in Otorohanga, Waikato. We operate a busy food business and require a reliable and experienced Chef who can prepare quality Indian dishes and support smooth kitchen operations.

About the role

The Chef will be responsible for preparing authentic Indian dishes, managing day-to-day kitchen operations, developing menu items, and maintaining high standards of food quality, hygiene, and presentation.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Prepare and cook traditional Indian dishes using authentic techniques, including tandoori dishes, curries, kebabs, tikkas, and regional specialties such as North Indian, South Indian, Mughlai, and Punjabi cuisines.
  • Prepare and manage spice blends, masalas, marinades, sauces, and other ingredients to ensure consistency in taste, quality, and presentation.
  • Operate kitchen equipment, including tandoor ovens, grills, fryers, and other commercial kitchen equipment.
  • Manage food preparation during service and ensure meals are prepared on time and to the required standard.
  • Supervise and train kitchen staff, including cooks, kitchen hands, and junior staff.
  • Assist with menu planning and development based on customer preferences, seasonal ingredients, and business needs.
  • Manage stock levels, food storage, ordering requirements, and wastage control.
  • Ensure all food safety, hygiene, and health and safety requirements are followed at all times.
  • Maintain a clean, organised, and safe kitchen environment.
  • Work with management to improve kitchen efficiency, food quality, and customer satisfaction.

Minimum requirements

  • At least two years of relevant work experience as a Chef or Cook, preferably with Indian cuisine experience; or
  • A relevant Level 4 cookery qualification or higher.
  • Applicants must also have good knowledge of Indian cooking techniques, spices, and ingredients.
  • Ability to work in a busy kitchen environment.
  • Good time management and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and follow workplace instructions.
  • A positive attitude and commitment to maintaining food quality and hygiene standards.

Hours and work schedule

  • Minimum 35 hours and maximum 40 hours per week.
  • Business hours are Monday to Sunday, 11:00 am to 10:00 pm.
  • The successful applicant must be available to work rostered shifts, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Minimum two weekends per month will be required.
