About the Role

Nex Electrical Services is seeking a skilled and motivated Electrical Engineering Technician to join our team. The successful candidate will provide technical support in the design, installation, testing, commissioning, maintenance and troubleshooting of electrical and electronic systems and equipment.

This is a hands-on technical position requiring strong electrical knowledge, practical problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently while following engineering specifications, safety requirements and company procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the design, development and modification of electrical systems, equipment and installations.
  • Interpret and work from electrical engineering drawings, circuit diagrams, schematics and technical specifications.
  • Install, test, commission and maintain electrical and electronic equipment and systems.
  • Conduct inspections and diagnostic testing to identify electrical faults, equipment failures and performance issues.
  • Use electrical testing and measuring equipment to conduct testing and troubleshooting.
  • Analyse test results and identify appropriate corrective actions.
  • Assist engineers with technical investigations, system modifications and improvement projects.
  • Prepare technical documentation, reports, testing records and maintenance records.
  • Monitor electrical equipment and systems to ensure they operate safely, reliably and efficiently.
  • Carry out preventative maintenance and scheduled servicing of electrical equipment.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, control and instrumentation systems.
  • Assist with the selection, installation and configuration of electrical components and equipment.
  • Liaise with engineers, electricians, contractors, suppliers and other technical personnel as required.
  • Ensure electrical work and technical activities comply with relevant New Zealand legislation, standards, codes and workplace safety requirements.
  • Identify potential hazards and implement appropriate safety controls.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, testing, repairs, maintenance and technical activities.
  • Provide technical advice and practical support to operational and maintenance staff.
  • Assist with commissioning and handover of completed electrical installations and projects.
  • Keep up to date with relevant electrical technologies, equipment, standards and technical practices.

Skills and Experience

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A relevant qualification in electrical engineering, electrical engineering technology or a related field.
  • Relevant practical experience in electrical engineering, electrical systems, equipment testing, maintenance or technical support.
  • Strong understanding of electrical principles, circuits and electrical systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics and technical documentation.
  • Experience using electrical testing and diagnostic equipment.
  • Strong fault-finding and problem-solving abilities.
  • Good understanding of workplace electrical safety requirements.
  • Ability to prepare accurate technical records and reports.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a technical team.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prioritise tasks and meet project and maintenance deadlines.
  • A current New Zealand driver's licence would be advantageous where travel between work sites is required.

Qualifications

A relevant NZQF Level 6 or higher qualification in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology or a closely related discipline is preferred.

Relevant industry experience may also be considered where appropriate.
