Full job description
Summer Students
New Plymouth, Tauranga or Wellington
Want to switch up your summer? We’re putting a call out to all Year 12 or 13 High school students, recent High school leavers or first-year students at universities or polytechnics. We’ve got seven summer student roles – yes SEVEN - available in our Electricity team, helping us get on top of a bunch of important tasks that we just haven’t had time to crack during the year.
These positions will mainly be based in New Plymouth but we do have some roles in Wellington and Tauranga. We're particularly interested to hear from students with links to these locations.
Your day-to-day will vary depending on where you’re placed, but you could be helping with things like:
- Finding and scanning electrical plans and documents
- Researching, checking, and improving our records so we’ve got the right info in the right place
- Labelling, QA, and destroying old paper files (once digitised)
- Reviewing and correcting SCADA displays (e.g. line sizes and equipment ratings)
- Helping tidy up and update our GIS connectivity data
About you
- Year 12, Year 13 or recent High school students and first year students at a university or polytechnic
- Reliable, detail-focused and can learn new systems and tasks quickly
- Comfortable asking questions and reaching out for help when needed
- Not needed but all bonuses – any experience working with GIS or spatial data, any experience using drawing software, any experience working within the energy industry
What's in it for you?
- Paid work experience in a supportive and welcoming office environment.
- We shut down for a few weeks around Christmas, so you’ll get those days off as well (unpaid)
- A foot in the door if you’re thinking about a future in energy, engineering or design
- We’ll set you up with everything you need to be successful – no prior experience required
About us
At Powerco, our purpose is to connect communities and that’s at the heart of everything we do. We're passionate about mahi that keeps over 1.1 million customers connected and supports the energy choices people want to make. As Aotearoa transitions to a low-carbon electricity system and moves toward a net zero 2050, we’re proud to play a role in making that happen.
Come and join us over summer – It’s a great chance to work alongside experienced professionals, build your confidence in an office setting, and contribute to work that genuinely helps our teams (and our customers!).
Apply now!
Applications close: Friday 21 August 2026
Our ability to get the best out of people is what sets Powerco apart. We realise that candidates – especially from underrepresented and neurodiverse backgrounds – often won’t apply for roles unless they meet ALL the criteria. We encourage anyone who shares our passion for connecting communities to apply for any role that aligns to your strengths and interests. We will provide a safe space where you can bring your whole self to work and thrive.
If you would benefit from support or adjustments in order to participate equitably in the recruitment process, please phone 0800 769372 or email kiaora@powerco.co.nz
