Healthcare Assistant – MercyAscot Hospitals (New Zealand)

MercyAscot Hospitals is one of New Zealand’s largest private surgical hospital groups, providing specialist surgical, medical, and inpatient services across its leading Auckland facilities. We are seeking compassionate and dedicated Healthcare Assistants (HCAs) to support our clinical teams in delivering exceptional patient care.

About the Role

As a Healthcare Assistant, you will work closely with Registered Nurses and other healthcare professionals to provide high-quality support to patients throughout their hospital journey. This role focuses on patient care, mobility assistance, clinical support, and maintaining a safe, comfortable, and professional healthcare environment.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

Assist patients with personal care, including bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting.

Support mobility, transfers, positioning, and daily living activities.

Assist patients with meals and hydration when required.

Promote patient comfort, dignity, and wellbeing.

Observe and report changes in patient condition to nursing staff.

Clinical Support

Assist Registered Nurses with routine patient care activities.

Prepare patient rooms and clinical areas.

Restock medical supplies and equipment.

Support patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.

Patient Transport

Safely transport patients throughout the hospital.

Assist patients attending procedures, treatments, and diagnostic appointments.

Move equipment, supplies, and clinical resources as required.

Health, Safety & Infection Control

Follow infection prevention and control procedures.

Maintain clean and safe patient care environments.

Use safe manual handling techniques and comply with hospital policies.

Support quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.

Communication & Documentation

Maintain accurate care records where required.

Communicate effectively with patients, families, nurses, and healthcare teams.

Report concerns, incident, and patient needs promptly.

Maintain confidentiality and professional standards at all times.

Skills & Requirements

Previous experience in healthcare, aged care, disability support, or hospital settings is advantageous.

New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 3 or Level 4) is preferred.

Compassionate, patient-focused, and professional approach to care.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.

Good physical fitness and ability to assist with patient mobility.

Understanding of infection control and workplace health and safety practices.
