About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced vocationally registered Public Health Medicine Specialist to join the Protection Clinical team and work within a collaborative and high-impact public health environment.
You will:
- Provide clinical leadership and specialist public health advice across NPHS from within the national Protection Directorate
- Contribute to a cohesive, effective, and equitable health system
- Support professional quality and leadership across multidisciplinary teams
- Contribute to operational service delivery nationally, including on-call activity and Medical Officer of Health statutory duties when required
In your substantive role, you will provide clinical leadership and work collaboratively and closely with regional and local public health services, and with the wider NPHS, Health NZ, the Ministry of Health, government agencies and external partners where our work requires a coordinated national approach. You will contribute to providing national leadership, specialist advice, coordination and service delivery to support strong health protection outcomes, actively engaging with Māori and Pacific partners. Central to the role is upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles in practice, ensuring all work supports improved and equitable health outcomes.

We are guided by Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Pae Ora Strategies to protect the health of whānau and communities by reducing environmental health risks, infectious diseases, harmful commodities, and border health threats. We are connected across boundaries to deliver public health services that are nationally planned, regionally delivered and locally tailored.
About You
We are seeking candidates who are experienced Public Health Medicine Specialists and Medical Officers of Health, committed to achieving equitable health outcomes and improving population health, with a strong understanding of Protection and the ability to apply Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles in practice. You will build strong relationships and collaborate effectively across teams and sectors, while demonstrating leadership, accountability, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Qualifications & Experience
- Vocational registration in Public Health Medicine (FNZCPHM, FAFPHM or equivalent)
- Current Annual Practising Certificate
Highly desirable:
- Designated as a Medical Officer of Health
- Expertise in Health Protection areas
- Experience working with Kaupapa Māori and Pacific health providers
- Competency or willingness to develop in te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori
- Experience working across the health system
