Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.

Counties Manukau is a dynamic and progressive organisation at the forefront of innovative healthcare delivery, serving one of New Zealand's most culturally diverse populations. This diversity provides unique opportunities for health professionals, both personally and professionally.

About the Role

The Cardiology Investigation Unit is seeking a full-time Trainee Cardiac Sonographer to join our dedicated team of Cardiac Sonographers, Cardiac Physiologists, and Cardiac Physiology Technicians in a fixed-term training position.

As a Trainee Cardiac Sonographer, you will receive comprehensive clinical training while working alongside experienced clinicians. Your role will include:

  • Performing adult transthoracic echocardiography under supervision.
  • Assisting with transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) procedures.
  • Developing the knowledge and practical skills required to become a qualified Cardiac Sonographer.

These trainee positions are rarely available and highly sought after. So, if you have a Bachelors level science or health science degree suitable for registration with the Medical Radiation Technologist Board (MRTB) and the drive and determination to succeed then we want to hear from you.

This training position involves gaining a post graduate level qualification through either the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) or the University of Auckland (UoA) - by both distance learning, attendance of residential block courses and through on the job training. The academic pathway will be confirmed at time of enrolment.

Note, candidates who hold New Zealand (NZ) residency (rather than citizenship) will only have access to the UoA academic pathway (subject to recognition of suitable undergraduate degree).

To be eligible for enrolment in the qualification you must be a NZ citizen or NZ resident (including citizens of the Cook Islands, Tokelau, and Niue) or an Australian citizen.

The successful applicant must be available to commence employment in November/December 2026, with postgraduate study commencing in March 2027 (subject to university enrolment dates).
