We're looking for a professional, reliable and approachable Security Officer to join our team at the Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa Tongarewa. Working as part of a dedicated security team, you'll help protect Te Papa's people, buildings, and collections while providing a welcoming and responsive service to our visitors and colleagues.

If you take pride in delivering high standards of security while providing excellent customer service, we'd love to hear from you.

Purpose of the position

This is a night-shift role that operates from 7.00pm to 7.00am (12-hour shifts), ensuring a safe and secure environment across the museum. You'll have strong working relationships with colleagues and be confident working independently and as part of a team, responding effectively to security matters and following established procedures to a high standard.

Everyday you'll work in a way that reflects manaakitanga (care and respect), builds whanaungatanga (strong relationships), and encourages auahatanga (creativity).

What success looks like

Success in this role means ensuring Te Papa remains a safe, secure and welcoming environment. You'll maintain a high level of professionalism, vigilance and integrity throughout your shift, working proactively and responding calmly to security matters, ensuring procedures are consistently followed to protect our people, buildings and collections.

Key responsibilities

  • To provide an efficient and approachable security service across Te Papa's buildings, during the night shift.
  • Conduct regular patrols and security checks, identifying and responding appropriately to potential risks, incidents or emergencies in accordance with organisational policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and report security issues, incidents and hazards accurately and promptly.
  • Liaise with the rostered On-Call Senior Security Officer or Manager Security Services when required, and follow all relevant Standard Operating Procedures, ensuring security protocols are followed and health and safety requirements met.

Skills, experience and behaviours

We're looking for someone who brings a strong combination of security awareness, sound judgement and a genuine commitment to providing excellent service. Ideally you will bring:

  • Previous experience in a security, customer service, emergency response or similar role.
  • Strong observation and situational awareness, with the ability to identify risks, assess situations and take appropriate action.
  • The ability to obtain a Certificate of Approval (COA) issued by the NZ Ministry of Justice & a Full Class 1 NZ Drivers' Licence (clean)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to engage positively with a diverse range of staff and visitors.
  • Reliability and a high level of personal integrity, with a strong commitment to health, safety, security and customer service.
  • The ability to maintain composure, professionalism and attention to detail when responding to incidents or unexpected situations.
  • A current first aid certificate is desirable but not essential.

What we offer

  • A supportive, values-driven team environment
  • A workplace committed to Te Tiriti
  • Comprehensive benefits including onsite Kindergarten, subsidised parking, café and store discounts, and free entry to paid exhibitions
