KiwiRail's telecommunications network is essential to the safe and efficient operation of New Zealand's rail system. We're seeking an experienced Telecommunications Technician to join our Auckland-based Network Services team.

In this hands-on role, you'll maintain, install, test, and repair a range of telecommunications assets, including radio and RF systems, fibre and copper networks, transmission equipment, and train control technologies. You'll play a key role in ensuring our critical communications infrastructure remains reliable, safe, and operational.

Key responsibilities include:

• Maintaining telecommunications equipment and supporting infrastructure
• Diagnosing and resolving faults across communication and network systems
• Supporting installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance activities
• Completing maintenance records and technical documentation
• Participating in emergency callouts and after-hours support when required
• Ensuring all work meets KiwiRail's engineering, operational, and safety standards
• Promoting a strong Health & Safety culture through proactive risk management

Ngā pūkenga e rapu nei mātou | What you will bring:

We're looking for a motivated telecommunications professional with strong RF experience, technical expertise, and a commitment to safety.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• NCT Level 4 Certification (or equivalent) and EAS Registration
• A current, clean Class 1 Driver Licence and First Aid Certificate
• Proven experience working with RF (Radio Frequency) technologies, radio communication systems, telecommunications networks, and transmission infrastructure
• Strong fault-finding, diagnostic, maintenance, and troubleshooting skills across telecommunications and communication systems
• Strong computer literacy and confidence using digital systems
• The ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment
• Monday to Friday roster, with flexibility to work afternoon shifts and additional hours as required. This role also requires a willingness to work outdoors, work at heights, travel away from home, and participate in after-hours callouts to support operational requirements.
• A demonstrated commitment to Health & Safety best practice, along with strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills

Desirable:

• Full EWRB Registration or Electrical Service Technician (EST) Registration
• Telecommunications experience within the rail, transport, or infrastructure sectors
• Knowledge of SCADA, VoIP, telemetry systems, and network diagnostic tools
• Experience working within operational technology, signalling, or other safety-critical environments
• Fall Arrest Certification and 4WD operating experience
