Speaking and Drama Teacher - Private Coaching Opportunity

Part-time | Dunedin | Commencing 2027

A well-established private performing-arts and communication education provider is looking for one or more talented teachers/practitioners to join its Dunedin teaching team from 2027.

The role involves working with young people aged approximately 10–17, developing skills in speech, drama, acting, voice, public speaking and communication.

Remuneration: Per-lesson rates, with rates varying according to lesson length, experience and qualifications.

We are particularly interested in people with a background in:

  • Acting or theatre
  • Drama education
  • Speech & Drama
  • Voice
  • Public speaking
  • Communication Skills
  • Performing arts or a related field

Speech New Zealand and/or Trinity College London experience is advantageous but not essential.

We’re interested in different areas of expertise

Ideally, we are looking for teachers who can develop with students as they progress through different levels of the programme and build long-term coaching relationships with them.

However, you don’t need to be an expert in every area. We are open to building a teaching team with complementary strengths and potentially creating more than one role.

You might be particularly strong in:

Acting & Theatre — plays, improvisation, storytelling, character, performance, directing, screen acting etc.

Voice and Speech — Speech, articulation, phonics, voice development, public speaking, presentation and communication skills.

Public Speaking & Communication — presentation skills, audience engagement, impromptu speaking, discussion, interviewing, debating, persuasive communication and communicating ideas clearly and confidently through both written and oral means.

Or a mixture

Coaching may include supporting students towards goals and events such as exams, concerts, auditions, school assessments and competitions.

The programme has an established curriculum, structured progression, lesson plans and teaching resources, so teachers won’t be expected to design everything from scratch. However you are welcome and encouraged to bring your own ideas, methods and resources if you choose.

We’re looking for people who are:

  • Warm, encouraging and confident working with young people
  • Strong communicators and/or performers
  • Reliable and professional
  • Comfortable giving constructive feedback
  • Passionate about helping young people develop confidence and communication skills
  • Able to work independently while following an established programme
  • Interested in developing as a teacher/practitioner

After-school teaching/coaching in Dunedin, commencing 2027, with potential for regular ongoing work. This has the potential to include in-school teaching time as well (however this is unconfirmed). Onboarding and training will begin towards the end of 2026.

If you think you could be a good fit, please send a CV and short introduction outlining your relevant experience and why you’re interested in the role.

Appointment will be subject to satisfactory reference, identity, right-to-work and relevant child-safety checks.

Pay: $30.00 – $45.00 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 2.0 per week

Work Location: In person
