Job Duties

Direct Patient Care & Clinical Support

Patient Intake & Chaperones: Escort patients to examination rooms, gather basic health histories, and record vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturation, height/weight).

Assisting Practitioners: Act as a chaperone during physical exams or minor clinical procedures (e.g., wound care, minor surgical procedures, cervical screenings).

Basic Clinical Procedures: Perform basic clinical duties within scope, such as electrocardiograms (ECGs), simple dressing changes, urinalysis testing, and phlebotomy (blood drawing, where certified).

Chaperoning & Comfort: Provide physical support and reassurance to patients who are anxious, frail, or undergoing uncomfortable procedures.

Clinic & Treatment Room Maintenance

Equipment & Room Prep: Clean, sanitize, and prepare consultation and treatment rooms between patients according to strict infection control standards.

Infection Control & Sterilization: Wash, sterilize, and package reusable medical instruments using autoclaves; ensure disposable medical items are safely discarded in biohazard containers.

Stock & Inventory: Monitor supplies in consultation rooms (syringes, gloves, dressings, specimen tubes) and restock them daily. Maintain cold-chain logging for vaccine refrigerators.

Administrative & Administrative Support

Specimen Handling: Label, record, and prepare pathology samples (blood, urine, swabs) for courier pickup and laboratory testing.

Documentation: Accurate and timely logging of patient measurements, test results, and clinical notes into the practice management software .

Recall & Health Promotion: Assist nurses with managing patient recall systems for routine checks, immunizations, and chronic disease follow-ups.

Skill & Qualification Requirements

Essential Qualifications & Certifications

Education: Certificate III or IV in Health Services Assistance, Medical Assisting, or equivalent vocational healthcare qualification.

Certifications: Current First Aid and CPR (BLS - Basic Life Support) certification.

Vaccination Compliance: Full, up-to-date immunization records (including Hepatitis B, Influenza, and other required healthcare vaccinations).

Clinical & Technical Skills

Vital Signs Proficiency: Competency in accurately measuring and recording physical health metrics.

Phlebotomy / Specimen Handling: Certified skill in blood collection and appropriate handling of biological specimens (highly valued in GP settings).

Infection Control Knowledge: Deep understanding of aseptic techniques, hand hygiene, biohazard waste disposal, and cross-contamination prevention.

EHR Literacy: Ability to navigate medical software (e.g., MedicalDirector, Best Practice, SystmOne, or similar EHR systems) to record clinical data accurately.

Soft Skills & Attributes

Empathy & Compassion: Warm, reassuring demeanor when dealing with sick, elderly, or anxious patients.

Clear Communication: Strong verbal communication for explaining basic procedures to patients and relaying critical observations to GPs or Practice Nurses.

Attention to Detail: High precision in specimen labeling, measurements, and maintaining clinical safety protocols.

Reliability & Teamwork: Ability to work efficiently in a high-volume team environment and multitask without sacrificing patient safety.
