Café Manager – Posto Semplice, Howick

Semplice Limited · Permanent, full-time · Howick, Auckland

$33.00 per hour · Guaranteed minimum 35 hours per week, typically 40 hours across a seven-day roster, including early starts (from 6:00am), weekends and occasional evening service.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Posto Semplice is a small Italian café and wood-fired pizzeria in Howick, part of Semplice Limited, whose bakery in St Heliers produces all of the cornetti, pastries and bread sold at Posto. We're looking for a Café Manager to take full responsibility for the venue: its daily operation, its people, its stock, its numbers and its reputation in the Howick community. You'll report directly to the owner and work alongside the Pizza Chef, who leads the kitchen in the evenings.

This is a small venue, so the manager leads from the floor. On two to three mornings a week you'll open and run the café on your own, setting up the cabinet, making coffee and serving customers, as well as collecting the day's product from the St Heliers bakery on the way in.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Venue operation and financial performance: run the day-to-day operation of Posto Semplice and be accountable for its weekly revenue, wage and food-cost targets, agreed with the owner. Complete the daily cash-up and end-of-day report, reconcile takings against the POS, and keep accurate records of sales, stock and supplier invoices.

Product and supply: plan the café's cabinet and product range in consultation with the bakery team and the Pizza Chef, place the daily and weekly product orders with the St Heliers bakery, and coordinate delivery and collection so the cabinet is full and fresh every morning. Collect product from St Heliers and transport it to Howick two to three mornings a week.

Purchasing and stock control: manage ordering with all café suppliers (coffee, milk, beverages, packaging, dry goods), maintain stock levels and par sheets, control waste, carry out stock counts, check deliveries against invoices and keep purchasing within budget. Review and recommend retail pricing with the owner.

Staffing: recruit, induct and train café front-of-house staff; build the weekly roster within the agreed labour budget; supervise and coach the team on service and coffee standards; manage performance, timesheets and leave in the rostering and payroll systems.

Customers and community: be the face of Posto Semplice in Howick. Build relationships with regulars, run the loyalty programme, respond to reviews and feedback, handle complaints, and represent the business at local events and with neighbouring businesses.

Marketing and new products: launch and promote new products, specials and seasonal items in the venue and locally, maintain in-store signage and menus, provide content and information for the venue's social media, and report back on what sells.

Functions and bookings: manage group bookings, functions and catering orders for the venue, including quoting, planning and coordinating with the kitchen and bakery.

Compliance and presentation: ensure the venue operates in line with its registered Food Control Plan, the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act and its on-licence (acting as duty manager when alcohol is being sold), and health and safety requirements. Maintain cleaning schedules, temperature records and the overall appearance of the venue and equipment.

Service: work on the floor and the espresso machine during service, open and close the venue, and maintain the barista and service standards you set for the team.

Reporting: provide the owner with a short weekly report covering sales, wages, stock, staffing and customer feedback, and attend a weekly operations catch-up.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

At least five years' experience in cafés or hospitality, including at least three years managing a venue or a small team. Experience with supplier ordering, stock control and rostering. Strong barista skills on a manual espresso machine (Posto runs a La Marzocco). A full driver licence valid in New Zealand and access to a reliable vehicle suitable for carrying stock between St Heliers and Howick (mileage reimbursed). A current Manager's Certificate under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act, or an LCQ with a Manager's Certificate obtained within six months of starting. Food safety training relevant to a registered Food Control Plan, or willingness to complete it on starting. Able to work autonomously and run the venue solo during quieter sessions. Confident, warm and genuinely interested in people: you'll be the person customers come back for. Fluent English. Available for early starts from 6:00am, weekends and occasional evening shifts.

Pay: $33.00 per hour

Expected hours: 35.0 – 40.0 per week
