Kitchen Hand

Position: Kitchen HandDepartment

Type: Full-time

Position Summary

The Kitchen Hand is responsible for supporting the kitchen team with food preparation, cleaning, dishwashing, and maintaining a clean, safe, and organised kitchen. The Kitchen Hand must follow food safety, hygiene, and workplace health and safety requirements at all times.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist chefs with basic food preparation, including washing, peeling, cutting, and portioning ingredients.
  • Prepare ingredients and kitchen items as instructed by the chef.
  • Wash dishes, pots, pans, utensils, and other kitchen equipment.
  • Keep kitchen benches, floors, equipment, sinks, and preparation areas clean and sanitised.
  • Assist with receiving, unpacking, and storing food deliveries.
  • Check food items and report damaged, expired, or low-stock products to the chef or manager.
  • Store food correctly and follow FIFO (First In, First Out) procedures.
  • Dispose of rubbish and maintain clean rubbish areas.
  • Assist with cleaning fridges, freezers, shelves, and other kitchen areas as required.
  • Follow food safety and hygiene procedures at all times.
  • Prevent cross-contamination by following correct food handling procedures.
  • Wear appropriate uniform and maintain good personal hygiene.
  • Follow all workplace health and safety procedures.
  • Assist chefs and other kitchen staff during busy service periods.
  • Complete cleaning duties according to the restaurant’s cleaning schedule.
  • Perform any other reasonable kitchen duties requested by the chef or manager.

Skills and Requirements

  • Previous kitchen or hospitality experience is preferred but not essential.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
  • Good teamwork and communication skills.
  • Reliable, punctual, and hardworking.
  • Able to follow instructions from chefs and managers.
  • Good understanding of cleanliness and food hygiene.
  • Able to stand for long periods and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and public holidays when rostered.

Workplace Expectations

Employees are expected to:

  • Arrive on time and be ready to start work at their rostered time.
  • Follow instructions from the chef and restaurant manager.
  • Treat customers and team members respectfully.
  • Maintain a clean and professional workplace.
  • Follow all food safety, health and safety, and company policies.
  • Notify the manager as soon as possible if they are unable to attend work.
  • Complete assigned duties before finishing their shift unless instructed otherwise.
