Full job description
We have a Casual (varied hours) vacancy for a Student Accommodation Night Support (known internally as Night Supervisors) to join our team, working night shifts on a rostered, on-demand basis. This vital role ensures our students feel safe, supported, and part of a positive community.
You will provide cover when staff members are not available for their shifts and be the first point of contact for residents needing pastoral care or well-being support during the night. This isn’t a traditional security role; you’ll lead on health, safety, and security, making sure protocols are followed, emergencies are handled, and first aid is provided when needed.
This is a great opportunity to connect with our Student Residents team and build the foundations for future fixed term or permanent work. When not responding to incidents or patrolling, you’ll be responsible for completing general administrative and coordination tasks.
Our Student accommodation team provides housing for over 4,500 students across a variety of accommodation styles, from first-year halls to self-catered apartments for senior students. We aim to create a safe, supportive, and enjoyable community that feels like home for our students.
This is a Casual position. Hours of work will vary week to week and can be rostered anytime between 11:00 pm and 9:00 am, Monday to Sunday.
The hourly rate for the role is between $30 and $32 per hour, negotiable depending on skills and experience.
Training
We provide training, including first aid, mental health event management, and basic security. This paid training will take place during regular business hours before your night shifts begin.
He kōrero mōu | About you
We’re looking for candidates who are empathetic, passionate about student well-being, and capable of handling challenging situations independently. While you’ll be working alone during shifts, remote support from the team will be available.
This role is ideal for those night shifts to fit their lifestyle, and we’ve found it to be a great fit for people with experience in pastoral care, student-focused roles, mental health services, social work, youth work, residential care or hospitality, or even those considering a career as a police officer.
E rapua ana mātou | We are seeking
- Be available for night shifts, across Monday to Sunday, including Public Holidays.
- Ideally, have experience providing pastoral care or support.
- Possess strong communication skills, able to guide and support others with a gentle, non-enforcement approach.
- Have some knowledge of security systems, CRMs, databases, and Building Health & Safety compliance (training will be provided).
- Be physically fit (a medical test by our approved provider is required).
- This position required successful applicants to pass NZ police vetting checks and vulnerable children’s Act requirements.
Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou | What we offer
Waipapa Taumata Rau | The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s leading university, guided by a commitment to excellence and service to our communities. With more than 6,000 academic and professional staff, we support a diverse community of over 47,000 students.
Guided by our values, we work collaboratively to advance knowledge, foster equity and inclusion, and contribute meaningfully to New Zealand’s social, cultural, and economic well-being.
- This is a flexible, casual role, giving you the freedom to work at times that suit you best.
- There is also the opportunity for longer-term work if you demonstrate strong commitment and a positive approach.
Me pēhea te tuku tono | How to apply
Please submit your application online by the closing date of Tuesday, 30 June 2026. Your application should include:
- A brief Cover Letter explaining why you're interested in this role and how your skills match the requirements.
- Your updated CV.
