Position Overview

Due to business growth and an expanding product range, we are seeking 2 experienced Department Managers to oversee the smooth daily operations of our mini supermarket.As a mini supermarket, we carry a focused but fast-moving range of grocery, produce, and chilled/frozen products. The role requires a hands-on manager who can manage purchasing, pricing, stock, staff, and customer service across all sections of the store.

Employment Type: Permanent Full-time

Pay Rate: $32 - $35 per hourMinimum

Hours: 30 to 35 hours per week

Location: Masterton, Wellington

Key Responsibilities

1. Purchasing & Supplier Management:

Source products at the best deals from regular and new suppliers.

Build and maintain strong relationships with suppliers and distributors.

Negotiate prices, discounts, and payment terms.

Ensure timely ordering and delivery, and check quality, quantity, and invoices on arrival.

2. Stock Control & Inventory:

Monitor daily sales and stock levels to avoid out-of-stock and over-stock situations.

Ensure proper rotation of stock (FIFO) to minimize wastage, especially for perishable goods.

Conduct regular stock takes and maintain accurate inventory records.

Keep purchase costs within budget set by the owner.

3. Pricing, Merchandising & Sales:

Set competitive retail prices and calculate margins to ensure profitability.

Ensure all prices are correctly updated in the POS/till system and on shelf labels.Ensure attractive product display, correct tagging, and timely setup/removal of promotional offers.

Plan and execute small-scale promotions suitable for a mini supermarket.

4. Customer Service:

Ensure every customer receives fast, friendly, and helpful service.

Handle customer complaints and queries professionally and escalate to the owner when required.

Train staff to maintain high customer service standards.

5. Staff Supervision:

Prepare and manage rosters for store staff.

Train, supervise, and motivate staff to ensure efficient store operations.

Ensure staff follow store policies, health & safety, and food hygiene standards.

6. Operations & Compliance:

Maintain cleanliness, health & safety, and food safety standards at all times.

Ensure safety equipment and procedures are in place.

Assist the owner with budgeting, cost control, and achieving weekly/monthly sales targets.

Key Skills & Qualifications

Minimum 2 years of work experience in retail/supermarket OR a relevant qualification at Level 4 or above (Overseas experience/qualification also acceptable).

Experience in managing a small team.

Good knowledge of stock control, inventory, and supplier management.

Understanding of POS systems, pricing, and margins.

Knowledge of Health & Safety and Food Safety regulations.Customer-focused, honest, and hardworking attitude.

Knowledge of Indian and Asian grocery products will be a strong advantage.Must be available to work weekends, evenings, and public holidays on a roster basis.
