As a Medical Imaging Technologist (MIT), you play a vital role in diagnosing and guiding treatment for patients. We welcome MITs across all subspecialties, including X-ray, CT, MRI, Nuclear Medicine/Molecular Imaging, Ultrasound, and Mammography.
Opportunities across Health New Zealand
MITs work in hospitals, outpatient imaging centres, and community healthcare facilities. Depending on your role and location, you may be involved in:
- Routine diagnostic imaging
- Emergency and trauma imaging
- Specialised procedures and interventional imaging
- Paediatric, breast, cancer, or gastrointestinal imaging
You'll collaborate with radiologists, physicians, and multidisciplinary teams to provide accurate, safe, and patient-centred imaging services.

Work environments include metropolitan hospitals, regional centres, and rural services. Shifts may include evenings, weekends, and on-call hours, depending on clinical needs.
Salary, leave, and benefits
All Medical Imaging Technologist (MIT) salaries are set under APEX collective agreements. Salary bands (based on 40 hours/week):
- General X-ray and CT: NZD $77,087 – $116,390
- 10 step salary scale, steps 1– 7 are Automatic Annual Progression, step 8 is Additional Progression Step and steps 9 and 10 are Recognition progression.
- Designated posiitions: NZD $111,240 – $151,410
- MRI and Nuclear Medicine / Molecular Imaging: NZD $110,851 – $141,403
- 10 step salary scale, steps 1– 6 are Automatic Annual Progression, steps 7– 10 are Merit Progression.
Additional compensation:
- Overtime, night shifts, weekends, and penal rates
- Higher duties allowance
Leave entitlements:
- Annual leave: 4 weeks, increasing to 5 weeks after 5 years
- Shift work: up to 5 additional leave days after 12 months
- Sick leave: minimum 10 days per year
- Parental leave: 6–12 months, up to 14 weeks paid
- 12 public holidays plus time in lieu or alternative holiday if rostered on
- Long service leave available
Professional support:
- Reimbursement of Annual Practising Certificate (APC) fees
- Employer-provided professional indemnity insurance
- Minimum 5 days CPD leave per year, with reimbursement up to NZD $2,500 per annum
- Superannuation / KiwiSaver contributions if eligible
Required qualifications and registration
- Registration with the New Zealand Medical Radiation Technologists Board (MRTB)
- Current Annual Practising Certificate (APC)
- Relevant recognised qualification in medical imaging for your subspecialty
- International applicants are assessed for equivalence against MRTB standards
