AFFCO: AN INSIGHTFUL REVIEW
An extremely oppressive workplace from day one. Getting the job is easy, as long as your urine sample is sparkling clean AFFCO will hire anyone from the local gang member to the overseas Filipino worker. The management chain was poorly structured resulting in a complete collapse of structure between the worker and management itself. Management instilled a culture within the workplace where you were encouraged to attend work regardless of any mitigating factors for fear of losing your job. The job itself is not too bad, those at the higher end of the pay-scale (usually skilled butchers) make reasonable money but those who are unskilled will earn peanuts. The work/life balance is poor, as shifts usually involve mandatory overtime and Saturday work is usually common place. 60/70 hours a week was fairly common. In my time there, I constantly saw corners cut in relation to safety and this is evidenced by the death recently at the Wairoa plant and worker injured at Moerewa following inadequate training. Unfortunately there is very little chance of career progression within the company, and a lack of exciting opportunities will soon dull down even the most enthusiastic worker and conform them to the same repetitive task day in day out. In all honesty AFFCO is an excellent example of everything New Zealand business should strive NOT to be, cheers Talleys.
Pros
A weekly paycheck, and you will certainly earn it.
Cons
The majority of the job.
