Great place to work depending on crew base and management

Indeed Featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
It’s supposed to be “One Amtrak”, but if you’re in a toxic environment where people do sneaky stuff behind your back and act childish I recommend transferring to another crew base, but that’s not easy since you’ll have to learn a new territory on your own time or if you’re lucky otherwise.Great company overall, great pay, great benefits and everyday is different. As a new comer you’ll have no work life balance until you get some seniority. You will spend a lot of time away from home & family.

Productive and fun work place

It’s a great job and opportunity for you to start a career. It’s a lot of room for advancement in the company for you to move up . You will be traveling everyday week couple days away from home .

What is the best part of working at the company?Nothing good about working there other than pay .What is the most stressful part about working at the company?Had to worry about getting fired over everything. Needed to be someone's buddy in order not to have to worry too much. Saw people keep jobs that did the same thing wrong as someone else but because they didn't know anyone others lost it What is the work environment and culture like at the company? The worst period never worked in a worse place What is a typical day like for you at the company?Show up. Stand around for an hour or two then go do a job and then do more standing around all while trying to avoid your other coworkers that are highly favored

What is the best part of working at the company? The pay, absolutely some of the best blue collar money you could ever hope to make. What is the most stressful part about working at the company?Amtrak will do everything within its power to suck out your soul though your feet. The managers are constantly trying to justify their existence, and we all know where that ends...What is the work environment and culture like at the company?Brutal, if you work in operations you can expect to see no vacation time for the first 1-2 years of employment, the attendance policy is out of control, and there are absolutely no sick days.

Decent co-workers

The guys are cool. Management sucks. Period was grabbed by a boss in the private section, and took forever for them to do anything about it. Once investigation was finally completed, they don’t even let you know what they did to fix the situation.

Pros

Co-workers

Cons

Management, work, pay

The opportunity you have grow

Amtrak has just about every job if you are willing to relocate. The pay increase is amazing. You have to be willing to work weekends and holiday. We are union so seniority is a must with the agreement employees.

Free train travel on most train for you and your dependents and you can take your friends with you

Amazing Benefits and Great Pay, No Family Life, Stressful, No Sick Days

Truly a unique company to work for. Good pay and amazing benefits for you and your family, which you'll never be able to see. Be prepared to work 6 days a week, and often, exactly 8 hours off the property before coming back and starting another shift. Work culture is rough, not for the faint-of-heart, one mistake is life altering or fatal. Your co-workers will aid you whenever possible, but be prepared for management to placing the blame on you; and taking the side of disgruntled passengers. You do not get any sick time. You start with two weeks of paid vacation time and one personal day per year. You will be counseled (and terminated if you repeatedly violate the attendance policy) if you miss 3 days of work in 30 days, 5 days within 90 days, and 11 days for the year. Be prepared to be understaffed and work with one other conductor for the entire trip; it is a common occurrence. Passengers can be very difficult to please; and when the trains break down or take delays, your the face of the company. Overall, its a great career, but a huge sacrifice. It is enjoyable when you get your train across the line of road on time, but it is most often a thankless job. The one or two passengers that praise you a job well done does give you a sense of accomplishment. The lack of security is a major issue. Amtrak police is not posted at every station as their presence was deemed intimidating and scaled back immensely; also tickets are not verified before passengers board the train anymore. Non-ticketed passengers can board the train un-vetted and without baggage inspection. Passengers with -

Started as a Trackman and became a Track Gang Forman

Started as a Trackman and became a Track Gang Forman, Welding Forman. Railroad Pilot moving equipment. There is room to grow if you are willing to do so. I was there about 9 years. I started in July of 1997 earned $47,000 my best year was around 110,000 1995. With only a high school education. There are various trainings, for various crafts as they call them; for your advancement and job security.

Burns you out

No time off without a write up. Bound to location for 2years. Pay is just ok. Clients are super rude and disrespectful. Union isn’t great but try to help

Onboarding is a slow process

Wish the onboarding process was faster and that promotion times were faster. Depending on the department you work in, work-life balance can be very difficult to navigate. Still, the company overall is a great company to work for once you get your foot in the door.
