Absolute mess

Paid the most out of NZ supermarkets but expected so much of the staff. People who had been with the company 20+ years were getting more mean each year.Paying more and lowering labour hours because planned wages were higher do the company was not giving out anymore than original when it went to living. Some of it is department pending for difficulty - checkout you just stand there. The likes of deli, expected to cook hundreds of chickens and items and work alone and deal with stock and cleaning constantly. Nightfill absolute not good and grocery in the day. Some departments get far more attention than others. Countdown doesn't value cleaning very high in time allocation. Stores always failing ecolab checks and and contractors who have contracts with countdown say the same thing - mould and sludge under service cases, bacteria in all the tray cracks. Machinery all gross. The company is cheap that they ordered labels and realised there was a nation wide issue with these labels and the machines causing them to stick constantly but decided it didn't matter.

Pros

Sometimes free food. Break system is generous if you get it

Cons

Usually horrible middle aged woman who see CD as their life and will be buried there

Stressful

Started as a alright job but each year just gets harder and harder. With hours being cut regularly your just expected to do more to cover it. They say safety is first but neglect the fact that reducing team makes it harder to remain safe. Polices get changed back and forth all depending on what manager you talk to.

Pros

Some stores put on free lunches everynow and then.

Cons

Expected to work like a slave and give up any free time on there whim.

Productive and fun workplace

You really feel supported being a part of this team. The customers are usually friendly and you start to recognise the locals. Breaks were regular and there were always a large variety of lunch options to either buy in store, or walk up to the staff room and be treated to donuts, coffee and chips, etc.
