Average but good place for first time job

Indeed Featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Good lace for a first part time job in high school. Management can be quite lazy and rude and have no problem making you work as many shifts as possible but sit in their office doing nothing. Discount is alright but nothing much.

Eh

Working here was alright but, I did have trouble with upper management once requesting to lower my hours as I had a full-time contract. This is because I was going to start attending school but the manager was hard to work with in terms of changing hours. It took him about a few weeks to let me re-write my contract which did not help.

Pros

Long breaks, Helpful staff

Cons

Not recommended for students looking for long hours

Stressful and Uninteresting

Management doesn't care about the workload on staff. They just blindly follow company's orders and requirements. Total head office control on shop work. No care about Health and Safety just talk. Staff intimidation and threats frequent.

Pros

Free snacks in staffroom

Cons

Stress, long hours, intimidation

It is what you make of it

Overall a great company to work for. Very proactive with safety and career opportunities are there for the taking. Decent wages, workplace culture depends on management

Pros

Fair wages and opportunities for development

Cons

Hours are not family friendly

Great people, but understaffed

Working in the online department is a very fast paced environment, as it is always understaffed on weekends leading to some team members not being able to take all their breaks. Staff are all very friendly and helpful

Productive and keeps you busy.

A job I never wanted to leave. If you have a strong mindset to do the work and go home, then you’re already winning. Bonus: the people you work with (depending where you’re situated) was the best thing. The support you get is unreal, you’ll feel like you never want to leave. Know your co-workers, get a long and communication goes a long way in this company. Maybe a bit political - but opinions can vary at some point. It’s just the best.

Pros

- Co-workers got your back, Paid well, No stress, Relaxing, Building experiences, Learn different things or different roles

Fun but stressful

The people/ team definitely make the workplace a lot morebearable. The pay is good enough to meet current living cost but could be more especially for nightf-fill team (seeing as we work odd hours). My issue is with management. There is no appreciation of what is done during the night by the night staff. You can definitely progress to the top but you wouldn't want to in this company unless you have a strong mindset and you don't want to have a social life. Its a great place to get started but then I would recommend just doing your contracted hours. You give them an inch they take a mile. Very high expectations with very little training. You get thrown into the deep end and you are expected to learn fast on your feet so then you can work more hours so to avoid hiring more people.

Fun, family feel, supportive, can be stressful, not enough pay

I've been working here almost 10 years now and would say it can be good, the people you work with make the working environment great, it sometimes can get very stressful and fast paced, some Countdowns are too clicky and can definitely have a bad impact on the working environment with favouritism etc. The pros are the staff discounts, you can have some fun at work and I think it's a great way to learn people skills and customer service, You are able to move up if you are wanting to work your way up as there's a decent amount of opportunities. Can have a lot of issues with staffing and can lead to being overworked- especially working during lockdowns etc it gets very hectic, on the other side they can be very flexible with after school care or appointments you need to attend to and can work around you if needed.

Pros

staff discount, flexible, fun, meet new people, learn new skills

Cons

Staffing, Management can be Clicky, Sometimes not enough training is given, Pay

I recommend working there

Working at Countdown is fun for a first time job or a part time job and especially if your young. It's fun meeting new people everyday standing at the checkouts, you get to see alot of action and alot of fun and cheerful things. The coworkers at Manurewa countdown were so easy to get along with and I would recommend it to any easy going, friendly, bubbly person.

Typical day

Ā typical day was meet and greet customers keeping your area clean and putting groceries back on the shelf but I was offered to other jobs within the company when it was slow

Productive

It was a good job but most time there were a lot of things that could have been better. The most enjoyable part of the job was having a really friendly team members to work and get along with.

Work

You have to push yourself forward but if you have Department Managers that only believe in themselves you wont get anywhere. It depends on each Store, if your lucky to get a Store Manager who encourages his/her team to excel then your in a good Store. If your in a Store that the Manager that has already chosen his specific team then your stuffed UNLESS you fight it and go over his head Wsge wise, very good but make sure you get paid for your value and check every week There will be drama at all stores, you have to choose to ignore it or be among it

Pros

Good wage. Can meet long life friends. In the right store awesome encouragement

Cons

Drama, Self absorbed Dept Managers, gossip, hours can be weird

Enjoyable work place

Usually very full on and busy, filled with lots of cheery faces, which made the overall experience more fun. Always happy to take on other shifts when needed and management were always open to feedback and queries we had. Least enjoyable part was doing the trolleys and bins as it is the responsibility of the checkout operators.
