Great place to work - more centered around sworn operational staff than service centre HR / Finance / logistics operations.
Working for the NZ Police is great but does not really provide any real career progression for non - sworn managers like myself. I'm paid well, have great terms and conditions but want more from my HR career.
Pros
[In NZ terms] a good TR (total rem) package + free car parking !
Cons
Real lack of career opportunity.

Overall excellent place to work
Duties daily consisted of dealing with phone enquiries, including assisting public with problems and queries, working at front counts, preparing files for court and entering files in a timely manner in preparation for follow-up by officers in the field.

Learned how to deal with people from all walks of life with empathy, and learned how to manage time. Learned how to prioritise. Learned how important it was to be a team player.

Relied on co-workers and realised they relied on me as well, as in this job working as a team is essential.

Hardest part of the job was the heavy shift work and the fact that most calls are of a negative nature, as can be expected.

Most enjoyable was helping the public and making a difference.
Pros
excellent salary, access to holiday homes, fascinating job
Cons
shift work and some heartbreaking stories from victims of crime

My time at Police
My day at work is involved as a Systems Test Analyst covering HRIS Systems, but have also had involvement within other aspects of systems of which i volunteered at a Police station on Saturdays for a whole year in which i learnt new systems.

Police like a lot of Govt Departments is going through a restructure, which has led to a change in management thinking on approach to business drivers and altermately how staff are reviewed in terms of employment. Management in the main have been very supportive but without teeth to get things done.

My workmates are fantastic and i will miss them so much.

The hardest part of the job over the last couple of years has been the politics between IT and the Business, which is relentless.

The most enjoyable part of the job, was knowing that you had put a 110% effort in to produced a good product which made life easier for the Front Line.
Pros
flexible working hours, location
Cons
ongoing restructure no end in sight.
