Our History

Our name says it all! Since 1948, we've been putting shoes on feet. We're proud to be a New Zealand based, family owned and operated footwear retailer with a rich history in craftmanship and design. It all started with the Anselmi family - and they're still here! Shane Anselmi is our Managing Director, while his wife Louise is our Creative Director. Together, they've built a company that is not only a household name in New Zealand, but a truly iconic footwear brand, known and loved by many. Today, we are proud to operate over 50 stores across our three brands, throughout New Zealand and Melbourne. Our reputation is based on creating exceptional customer experiences whilst selling footwear of the highest quality and craftsmanship. Our Values

We're a values-based organisation. This means everything we do relates to our six company values: Inspiring, Accountable, Integrity, Inclusive, Innovative and Proactive. We live and breathe these values on a daily basis - alongside our Purpose, these values shape what we do and the decisions we make; they are the 'why' behind what we do and how we act. Demonstration of our values is celebrated daily, weekly and monthly with thousands of values nominations received from both our stores and Support Office annually. We also celebrate and recognise our values champs regularly across the company - big or small, to us it's all worth celebrating!

Our People

With a team of almost 500 team members in the Overland family, based across New Zealand and Australia, it's safe to say our people are at the heart and soul of everything we do. We have a dedicated Support Office based in Newmarket, Auckland - just down the road from where our first store opened in 1990! It's a strong belief of ours that life needs meaning, passion and reason. Our 'why' drives everything we do and every decision we make. We live by our company purpose; 'Together we create to inspire'. It's of utmost importance to us that our team feel inspired and have a desire to inspire others too. This is why we focus on offering a positive, empowering environment and creating a true sense of belonging for our people. Our Brands

Originally called Overland, the name Merchant 1948 came to fruition in 2012 and marked a new era for the brand. We're proud to offer our customers a truly transformative footwear experience whenever they step through the doors of a Merchant 1948 store. Since 2002, Mi Piaci has provided highly sought after, luxury footwear to fashion-forward New Zealand and Australian women. Contemporary in attitude, Mi Piaci is proud to be a female-driven venture which continues to prioritise and celebrate its design-led approach and search for the best materials. The range is predominantly designed in New Zealand and our team endeavours to constantly challenge preconceived notions and cement our position as the home of principled design and footwear. Founded in 2007, Deuce was created as a challenge to the status quo by prioritising comfort as much as style; with signature dual-density, moisture-wicking DualCore footbeds offering support you can feel. An accessible price point means key trends are translated for a New Zealand audience and lifestyle. As well as celebrating ambition, resolve and spirit, Deuce has been dedicated to giving back since 2014 when we started our own charity, the Young Hearts Project. The launch of our charity then saw $5 donated from every pair of sneakers sold going forward. To date, over $1.2 million has been raised for the Young Hearts Project.
