Worked at Typo (Gateway) as a P/PT and it offered me a chance to learn more about the job, about myself and also open up myself for more to others from different walks of life, great salary package + overtime is granted and company benefits are excellent.

Advancement opportunities are available although the hours you have to put in, on the job, are treacherous as they drain the life out of you!
Pros
Great learning experience, management is very thoughtful, 1 hour lunch break, company benefits include medical aid after 6 months, Uif, Pension Fund etc and advancement opportunities are available.
Cons
Long hours, merchandising of store is done ever so frequently and it's a fast-paced environment.

If you have fun colleagues it makes it bearable. Sales assistants don’t make a lot of money. Not a lot of advancement opportunities. Not much training either
Pros
50% staff discount on all brands
Cons
Not allowed to work across brands

If you want a job where you have no support or guidance this is your job. They dont care about you or your health it's the worse place you can ever ever work! They force you to lone trade even if your uncomfortable with it. 5 managers have walked out and I cant even count the amount of staff thats left. The store has no toilets so you have to hold your bladder in if your alone and bust.
Pros
No rules
Cons
They don't care about you poorly run

I've worked with Cotton On for 4 years now. The work environment is very different depending on your management team and store type. Larger stores are much more intense and expect a more sales oriented service while smaller stores have the ability to give a much better long lasting connection with customers which I really resonate with. Even as an associate I treated the store as if it were my own and within a few months became a key holder(support manager right above associate) Opportunity to move up isn't always easy. You must be able to bend over backward and work your hardest but beyond hard work you really need to have a genuine knack for the retail environment. I began feeling unappreciated after flying back and forth for the company and having nothing else to show for my work or an opportunity to move up farther. Which in the end reminds me that in retail you are replaceable. If your game plan is to stay in a company and move up I recommend you move OUT of the stores and into offices if possible. Solid job for someone in school, fun people in general and the work environment is all about being yourself
Pros
50% discount off clothing
Cons
Inability to move up, Low Hours, High Expectation for Low Compensation

They underpay workers.
The company does not care about their employees. Management are dodgy and no one does anything to correct it.

You can’t go to management for help. There’s no support or guidance.

HR doesn’t reply when you get under paid.

You’re aren’t acknowledged by head office when they come into the store. You are ignored and over worked for minimum wage.
Pros
Staff discount
Cons
Pay rate is disappointing, management are useless, no support

I worked there for a Christmas period, and we had a manager for two days before she left and we were left understaffed and under-trained. Because of this I was given a very high paced environment and not many opportunities to learn things like register and store procedures. However, I did focus on customer service and did my absolute best to continue to provide quality service for our customers and keeping the store looking at the correct standard.

The management is very friendly during training, on the job they become a bit harsh unnecessarily. I was always anxious cause my manager was always shouting and frustrated and it affects how you work. I would still work in retail and in the same store but for a bigger salary and different management. My colleagues were amazing, cool people.

Great people. However the managers are horrible at remembering shift changes and letting you know what they've changed. Had issues with my pay nearly every paycheck. But I would recommend it. They never keep Christmas Casuals though.

Love working at Cotton on. People there are great to work with. Management is fantastic. Love working with a company that champions the employees as much as the customer.

Great company to work for. Cotton On is not only about making a profit, they also have a foundation that supplies those in need of sanitary items, water, and schooling.

Worked in Auckland for 2 years! Management was horrific. Huge bullying and toxic culture. You get no training and have to deal with difficult situations and people constantly. They did however, give breaks on time, and an hour long. You get a 50% off discount which is good and 'uniform deals' every once in a while which is better than 50% off. Doesnt exactly make up for the fact you're treated badly, but helps soften the blow. Good starting point for someone entering the workforce, they seem to take anyone regardless of experience, but be prepared to be grow thick skin.

Management has a lot of favoritism, little growth opportunities. Big stores a preferred over small stores, hard work is not recognized because of selfish managers who take all the glory for themselves
Pros
Free Clothes
Cons
Long hours

I thought it would be fun and relaxed. Instead I felt pressured to sell products and push people into buying things which I don’t like happening to me let alone trying to do it to someone else. A manager came up to me on my first day and told me “we need to make $2000 in 15 minutes” what a joke. I was having nightmares about ways in which I can sell products. Also, I was not advised of my work schedule/hours. One day a manager called me, asked me to come into work, then 10 minutes later said , don’t worry we’ve found someone else. So rude. Never want to work for that company ever again
