We are seeking a motivated and versatile Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) to join our busy laboratory team at Te Nikau Hospital on a fixed-term maternity cover basis. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the delivery of high-quality laboratory services that support patient care across the West Coast region.
Working as part of a collaborative and supportive team, you will perform a variety of pre-analytical, phlebotomy, and laboratory duties while ensuring high standards of quality, accuracy, and patient service.
About the Role
As a Medical Laboratory Technician, you will play an integral role in supporting the laboratory's daily operations. Your responsibilities will include:
- Receiving, registering, and preparing samples for testing and distribution within the laboratory and to external laboratories.
- Performing phlebotomy and associated patient services duties.
- Undertaking laboratory analysis and testing of samples.
- Monitoring and recognising normal and abnormal results and escalating concerns appropriately.
- Identifying and addressing machine or technical irregularities, notifying the Laboratory Manager or Technical Specialist as required.
- Ensuring all work is completed in accordance with laboratory procedures, policies, and quality standards.
- Participating in quality assurance programmes and continuous improvement activities.
- Providing exceptional service to patients, clinicians, and other stakeholders.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will have:
Essential
- Registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand and a current Annual Practising Certificate (APC), or be working towards MLT/ML-PAT registration.
- NCEA Level 2 or equivalent qualification.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Excellent organisational and time-management skills.
- The ability to work independently and prioritise competing demands.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- A commitment to teamwork and delivering high-quality patient-focused services.
- Reliability, accountability, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- An understanding of and commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and equitable health outcomes.

- Previous healthcare or laboratory experience.
